Caricature Sculpture

$130 Purchase required to enroll

Students will select a famous person, friend or family member and determine certain striking characteristics that can be exaggerated in a playful, comic, or grotesque manner. We will start with the measurements of a realistic head, facial features and expression. Then we will examine ways to create distortion as we ideate drawings in preparation for our sculpture. An introduction to caricature artist Honoré Daumier and others, will springboard us into creating our own caricature sculptures.

Students will choose how they want their sculptures presented, either freestanding, mounted on wooden bases for the shelf, or bas relief hanging on a wall. Students also have the opportunity for conceptual art by including symbolism necessary for the story of their caricature. We will discuss where those elements are most effective in a small sculpture.

Day 1: Inspiration, brief lesson on portraiture, and brainstorming. Students will prepare and start sculpting.

Day 2: Sculpt

Day 3: Paint our sculptures and base, and photograph our pieces
